VICTORVILLE • After being forced to medically retire from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Kurt Vannaman started his own computer business in 2004. Sonic Systems in Apple Valley has grown since then, but the company still remains a family affair with just four employees, three of them Vannaman’s sons. So 45-year-old Vannaman was surprised when United Furniture Industries offered him a contract to install all the communication systems in its new 505,162-squarefoot warehouse at Southern California Logistics Airport. “It was huge for us,” Vannaman said. “I wasn’t expecting. I can’t really say I was confident about it.”

Sonic Systems is one of more than a dozen local vendors UFI has used to launch its operations in Victorville, creating jobs in the area in addition to 70 workers it had planned to hire by the opening on Nov. 14.
